Making Altered Books

Updated: Dec 28, 2019

Here's a fun project I started. I'm always looking for props for my still life photography and books are a big part of a lot of my still life. When I hit the antique shops I keep a eagle eye out for some good old vintage books. You know how you get an idea in your head of what you want and won't give up till you find it. Well I have that problem with books. I have found a few small ones, but I wanted something bigger and when I do find one it's way out of my budget.

Last May I join 2 Lil Owls Texture Club and it has been one of the best investments I've made. Loaded with tons of information! Which is where I watched a mini workshop on how to make altered books. I have to say that tearing apart an old vintage book was hard to do at first, but some of the books I have in my collection where in pretty rough shape. So it was easy to tear them up a bit. I even remember which antique shop I bought them at so I'll be heading back there soon.

I had been collecting bits and pieces of scrapbooking items because I'm getting ready to do some mixed media projects, which I'll post about later. But in the meantime I used some of those bits and pieces to create this lovely altered book. It turned out beautifully! I'll be making a few more books similar to this one to add to this collection. I'm looking forward to using this altered flower book for many still life projects.

You know just about a year ago I was contemplating on whether or not I was going to continue my career as a photographer.

There's no more contemplating! I am continuing my photographic journey! Learning new techniques, making my own props and creating wonderful works of art! I'm so in love with who I have become as an artist/photographer!!!

Have you ever looked at your art with amazement and said to yourself WOW! I did that and it looks FANTASTIC! I do that sometimes and still can't believe I did it! And I'm gonna keep moving forward as a photographer cause I LOVE IT!

I have lots of new projects coming up!
